Governor Pulaali’i and First Lady Lois Pula Joins Special Church Service
to Commemorate the Launch of the New Academic Year for the Department of Education

NU’UULI, American Samoa - On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Governor Pulaalii joined educators, government officials, and community members at a special church service hosted by Ekalesia Metotisi “O A’u o le Vine Moni” in Nu’uuli to officially launch the new academic year for the Department of Education. The service, held at 2:00 p.m., marked a spiritual beginning to the school year under the theme: “The Learners of Today Are the Leaders of Tomorrow.”
Led by Rev. Tagiilima Lavilavi, the service offered words of spiritual guidance and encouragement to all in attendance. He encouraged all educators to look beyond titles and accolades and instead anchor their work in honesty, humility, and genuine commitment to the students they serve. In a heartfelt message, Rev. Tagiilima reminded the assembly of educators and attendees, the future of our island territory rests on the pursuit of excellence and moral integrity; when our teachers exemplify the principles they impart that they can truly foster meaningful change in the lives of the students.
Governor Pulaalii delivered heartfelt remarks, emphasizing the profound role teachers play in shaping society. “Teachers are among the most vital gifts in our lives,” he stated. “They are the utmost important guides and our children’s greatest hope in our society.” He applauded the dedication of all those who serve in the education system, including teachers, counselors, administrators, maintenance staff, custodians, and every individual committed to nurturing the future of American Samoa. The Governor extended his best wishes to all educators as they embark on the new school year.
Director of Education Maefau Dr. Mary Lauagaia Taufetee also addressed the congregation, expressing gratitude to the leaders of government and all attendees who came to honor and uplift the department and its workforce. She acknowledged the collective effort and support that make the educational mission not only possible but profoundly meaningful. Dr. Taufetee emphasized that the success of the department is rooted in shared values, collaboration, perseverance, and a deep commitment to nurturing the minds and spirits of future generations. She also paid tribute to the educators, administrators, and staff whose tireless service continues to shape the academic and moral foundation of the territory.
As the new school year begins, Governor Pulaalii and Lt. Governor Pulumataala, extend their warmest wishes to the Department of Education and to every educator across American Samoa. May this academic year be filled with inspiration, resilience, and continued success in shaping the minds and hearts of our future leaders.
