Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New Port Facility at the
Fagatogo Wharf

Fagatogo, American Samoa - On July 11th, The American Samoa Government held a formal groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the commencement of construction of the new Port Facility, a major infrastructure development under the direction of the Department of Port Administration.
The ceremony began with an opening hymn rendered by members of the community who gathered in support of the event, followed by an invocation led by Stake President Fiatamalii Apulu. The dignified observance set a reverent and unified tone for the historic occasion.
Among the notable attendees were the First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, members of the Fono, Cabinet officials, and other distinguished government leaders and community stakeholders.
In his address, the Honorable Governor of American Samoa expressed his gratitude to all project partners who played a vital role in making this endeavor achievable. He extended special recognition to the American Rescue Plan Act Office (ARPA) for their critical support in fully funding the project. “This initiative transcends the scope of a traditional construction project, it’s an investment in the future of our territory and our people,” the Governor remarked.




Director of the Department of Port Administration, Mr. Barney Sene, also delivered remarks, outlining the significance of the new facility in enhancing maritime operations, strengthening economic development, and improving the safety and efficiency of port activities. Additionally, he expressed his appreciation to various partners and individuals who made this project possible.
Representing the private sector, Mr. Jeremy Kemp of Westland Construction, the general contractor for this project, expressed his team’s commitment to quality, safety, and timely completion. “We are honored to be part of a project that will leave a lasting impact on American Samoa,” said Mr. Kemp.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks a significant milestone in American Samoa’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and support sustainable growth. The American Samoa Government, in coordination with the Department of Port Administration and key stakeholders, looks forward to the successful delivery of this transformative project.
