Manu‘a Islands Commemorate 121st Anniversary
of Cession to the United States

Ta’ū, Manu’a - The early hours of July 16th were filled with excitement and pride as the people of Manu’a gathered in Avaloa, Malaetele in Ta’ū to commemorate the 121 years since the signing of the Manu’a Cession.
Festivities began last week, bringing together the community through a series of vibrant activities, including cricket and volleyball tournaments, a farm fair, and cultural events hosted by various government departments. On the morning of July 16th, the official program began with the raising of flags in Avaloa, followed by a traditional ‘ava ceremony and a parade featuring the vibrant local community, government agencies and departments to honor this historic occasion.
Though Manu‘a Cession Day has become an annual tradition that the Manu‘a Islands are well accustomed to, the meaning behind it remains strong. Year after year, the celebration continues to reflect the pride, history, and deep cultural roots of the people of Manu‘a and American Samoa.

In his special address, Governor Pulaali‘i conveyed his profound gratitude to God for the blessing of being able to participate in Manu‘a Cession Day for the first time in his official capacity as Governor of American Samoa.
“Manu‘a is our Genesis,” Governor Pulaali‘i declared with heartfelt pride. “It is a legacy to be honored, a testament to the enduring resilience of the Manu‘a people, whose strength and spirit continue to inspire far beyond our shores.”
Marking this historic milestone, the Governor extended his warmest wishes to the islands of Manu‘a and expressed sincere appreciation for their invaluable contributions to the cultural, historical, and civic fabric of American Samoa. He emphasized that the unwavering commitment of Manu‘atele to preserving tradition and fostering progress remains a guiding light for the entire territory.
Congratulations, Manu‘atele, on 121 remarkable years of unity, heritage, and strength!
