The Department of Parks and Recreation Breaks Ground for the New Onesosopo Park Sports Complex Project
AUA, American Samoa - A significant milestone was reached in the development of the new Onesosopo Park Sports Complex Project. Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula joined leaders from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), distinguished guests, employees, and members of the community to officially break ground on the long-anticipated project.
The ceremony was officiated by DPR Deputy Director Taimalelagi Dave Godinet, who warmly welcomed everyone with a message emphasized with gratitude. The program continued with an empowering spiritual message from Deacon-Catechist Lui Polu, whose words of faith ensured encouragement, unity, and purpose for the day’s event.

Originally envisioned in 1984 and completed in 1990, Onesosopo Park has long stood as a cornerstone of community life and recreation in American Samoa. In his remarks, Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula reflected on the park’s history and enduring significance, stating, “Today, we renew that legacy and reaffirm our commitment to providing spaces that strengthen the bonds of family and community.”
Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula continued on to highlight the deeper meaning behind the project, noting that “this new Sports Complex represents more than fields and facilities, it is an investment for our children and families. Through this project, we are building more than structures - we are building a stronger, healthier, and more united community.”
Following the ceremonial groundbreaking and concluding the event, DPR Director Andrew A. Pelesasa announced that the project carries a $3.2 million budget with the winning bid awarded to Rainbow Construction, and is projected for completion within an approximately 12-month timeframe. He expressed his gratitude to all project partners for their collaboration and dedication in making the project a reality.
The new Sports Complex reflects a renewed commitment to progress and community development, standing as a symbol of faith, opportunity, and inspiration for the youth of American Samoa. The project represents not only an investment in recreation and infrastructure but also in the health, well-being, and unity of our community, ensuring a lasting legacy for generations to come.
