Governor Pulaali’i Delivers Special Remarks at
DOE Athletics Opening Ceremony

TAFUNA, American Samoa – The Athletics Division of the American Samoa Department of Education (ASDOE) proudly commenced its Athletics Opening Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 13, 2025, with the presence of Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula, Fono members, as well as cabinet members. The event brought together parents, families, supporters, student athletes, and DOE officials in a powerful show of unity and pride.
In his special remarks, Governor Pulaali’i expressed his deep gratitude that sports for all student athletes had returned, noting that while DOE previously made reductions in sports funding, after much consideration, the decision was overturned.
The Governor encouraged student athletes to respect one another’s talents and to carry themselves with dignity both on and off the field. “Everyone has phones these days. I encourage our youth to use them wisely and, above all, be respectful in what you post on social media. We, as Samoans, are known to be a very respectful people. Let us spread love, hope, and respect,” said Governor Pulaali’i.
He further emphasized the importance of balancing athletics with academics, reminding students that education and sports must go hand in hand to ensure a brighter future.
Governor Pulaali’i concluded by thanking the parents and families of all student athletes for their unwavering support and belief in their children, recognizing their vital role in shaping future leaders.
To officially open the 2025–2026 sports year, Governor Pulaali’i, joined by members of the House of Representatives, had the honor of throwing the first ball. This year’s sports include football, volleyball, and softball. Good luck to all the competing schools!
