Governor Pulaali’i Attends Historic Swearing-In Ceremony
of Samoa’s 18th Parliament

APIA, Samoa — History was made as the Honorable Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula became the first Governor of American Samoa to attend a swearing-in ceremony for the Parliament of Samoa. Joining him were First Lady Lois Phillips-Pula, along with members of the American Samoa Government delegation. Representing the Legislature of American Samoa were Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean and Speaker of the House Savali Talavou Ale.

The official ceremony held at the Tuana’imato Sports Complex, drew an audience of more than 2,000 people. In a setting both formal and deeply emotional, all 51 members of the 18th Parliament of Samoa were sworn in. The event also marked a moment of transition as outgoing Prime Minister, the Honorable Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, made her final appearance in office. However she will continue to serve her constituency as a member of Parliament.

 

The Samoan Head of State, His Highness Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aleto’a Sualauvi II, administered the oath of office to the nation’s 8th Prime Minister, the Honorable La’aulialemalietoa Polata’ivao Schmidt, along with his newly appointed Cabinet.

In his first official remarks, Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa acknowledged Governor Pulaali’i, Senate President Fruean, and Speaker Ale for honoring the occasion with their presence. He emphasized the importance of regional partnerships and expressed gratitude for the support shown by the American Samoa leadership.

 

Following the ceremony, Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa and Governor Pulaali’i held their first official meeting as leaders of the two Samoas. During their discussions, they exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining the longstanding bonds between the two Samoas.

 

Governor Pulaali’i reflected on the day’s significance, stating: “Today is a great day for the Samoan Government. Congratulations Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa, your cabinet members, and especially the people of Samoa.

 

Governor Pulaali’i historic participation in the swearing-in of Samoa’s Parliament highlights the enduring cultural, ancestral, and political ties that continue to unite the two Samoas.
