Future Leaders Take the Spotlight at the 12th Annual Close Up
Summit In American Samoa

UTULEI, American Samoa - The 12th Annual Close Up Summit opened with an inspirational blend of tradition, inspiration, and civic pride as Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula joined a distinguished panel of guests and student delegates from high schools across the territory.

Held at the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium, the summit is hosted in partnership with the American Samoa Department of Education, bringing together students, educators and leaders to explore foundations of leadership, public service, engage in meaningful discussions on government issues and collaborate on solutions.

The program began with a heartfelt invocation and stirring message from student delegate Tavita Savaii, whose words set the tone for a week dedicated to leadership, learning, and community. Dr. Dottie Tuisamatatele, DOE Assistant Director of the Secondary Division, led the opening ushering in a program designed to ignite civic engagement among American Samoa’s youth.

Governor Pulaali’i delivered special remarks that resonated deeply with the students. Speaking on the principles of government, he emphasized the importance of understanding civic duty and leadership. But it wasn’t all lectures, he invited students to join him in a lively Q&A session, sparking thoughtful dialogue and laughter throughout the auditorium.

“Our Samoan cultural values of respect, service, and humility are the foundation of great leadership,” the Governor said.

Following the Governor’s remarks, Tuifa’asisina Athena Mauga, Deputy Director of the Department of Education, spoke on behalf of the Director, reinforcing the department’s commitment to empowering students through civic education. Representatives from the Close Up Foundation in Washington, D.C. also shared brief remarks, highlighting the national significance of the summit and applauding the territory’s dedication to youth leadership. The Close Up Foundation Summit continues to be a beacon for civic learning in American Samoa, offering students hands-on experiences in government, policy, and public service. With voices like these leading the way, the future of the territory looks brighter than ever.
