The ceremony honored key partners collaborating with the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority on the Google Le Vasa Cable Project, a transformative initiative aimed at strengthening connectivity across the Pacific region.

In a significant cultural gathering, the event was attended by Governor Pulaali'i Nikolao Pula, Lt. Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr., Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, Speaker of the House Savali Talavou Ale, ASTCA Board Members, Cabinet Members, ASTCA management and staff, and the proud community of Aoloau.

The visiting delegation included Major General Joaquin Malavet, Senior Advisor and Liaison to INDOPACOM for AP Telecom; Walter Panzirer of the Leona and Harry Helmsley Charitable Trust; and representatives from SubCom.

In her remarks, ASTCA CEO Folasaitu Sorepa Thomas expressed deep appreciation for the occasion, acknowledging the valued partnerships that support American Samoa’s voice and presence within the Pentagon and across the Pacific region. She also confirmed that work has officially commenced on the Google Le Vasa Cable Project, with survey teams actively assessing the safest and most suitable landing points within the territory. This milestone marks a significant advancement in the project’s development.

Major General Malavet, speaking prior to taking his ‘ava cup, conveyed his gratitude on behalf of AP Telecom, SubCom, INDOPACOM, and the Department of War. “Thank you for the most powerful and gracious welcoming. I honor your blessings and extend the blessings of my tribe, the Marine Corps, to you all. I also offer greater blessings and victory to American Samoa.”

He concluded, “Together, we are building more than just a cable system, we are forging new connections, real connections. We are creating new bloodlines of power and grace, with courage and conviction, with freedom and liberty. Thank you, and God bless American Samoa.”

In his remarks, Governor Pulaali’i acknowledged the significance of the moment, describing it as a historic milestone for the territory. “We felt in our hearts the sincerity and power with which Major General Malavet spoke,” the Governor said.

Governor Pulaali’i also requested that the delegation extend American Samoa’s love to Admiral Paparo of INDOPACOM and the Department of War, while emphasizing the evolving role of the territory in the Pacific. “These are new times and new relationships. The United States should look at our territory, not just as a territory but as a place that proudly flies the flag of the United States of America within the Pacific region,” Governor added. Governor Pulaali’i further shared that during his meeting with Admiral Paparo, he was pleased to learn that the Google cable project is being supported under the Department of War. He expressed gratitude for this renewed perspective on the role and responsibility of the military within the Pacific Islands, recognizing its importance in strengthening regional connectivity and security.

The Governor further acknowledged the support of the Leona and Harry Helmsley Charitable Trust for its contributions toward healthcare development at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center and the Department of Public Health.

The ava ceremony served as a powerful cultural expression of welcome and respect, symbolizing the strengthening partnership between the American Samoa Government, ASTCA, and its international collaborators on the Le Vasa Project.

In the coming days, representatives from the Governor’s Office, ASTCA, and the visiting delegation will travel to Samoa to continue discussions on regional connectivity, including the Hawaiki Cable.
