FAGAALU, American Samoa – The LBJ Tropical Medical Center marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new Tri-Level Parking Lot on Friday, September 5, 2025. The much-anticipated facility is aimed at addressing the growing need for parking at the hospital, which has long been a concern for patients, their families, and visitors.

Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. was present at the ceremony, alongside lawmakers, government officials, and agency representatives. The event was also attended by LBJ Board Members and House Representative Faimealelei A. Allen, who welcomed the esteemed guests and highlighted the importance of the project.

In his remarks, Acting Governor Pulumataala expressed his congratulations to LBJ on this vital new development. He emphasized how the Tri-Level Parking Lot would greatly benefit the community, noting that it would be especially useful for the increasing number of patients and their families who visit the hospital. “This new parking facility will help alleviate one of the biggest challenges faced by the public here at LBJ, and it will ensure easier access to the essential healthcare services our people deserve,” said Acting Governor Pulumataala.

LBJ CEO Dr. Scott Anesi also took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the government for their generous funding of the project. He shared that the parking shortage has long been a concern, but with the new facility, they are addressing that issue head-on. “This is not just a parking lot, but a facility that will also serve as a tsunami zone, providing critical preparedness for natural disasters. We’re ensuring that this structure will have multiple uses for the community, not just today, but in the future as well,” said Dr. Anesi.

Speaking on behalf of the LBJ Board, Representative Faimealelei A. Allen expressed his deep appreciation to the Honorable Governor and Lieutenant Governor for their continuous support in spearheading critical projects for LBJ through ARPA funding. He emphasized how the parking facility is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of healthcare services in American Samoa. “This is just one of many projects that are being made possible through ARPA, and it’s a testament to the commitment of our leaders to provide the medical services our people have long deserved,” Faimealelei remarked.

Once completed, the facility will significantly improve access for visitors, staff, and patients, making it easier to navigate the busy hospital grounds.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of another exciting new chapter for LBJ, one that promises to ease parking challenges and contribute to the hospital’s continued growth and preparedness in serving the people of American Samoa.
